The Canossa Series: Real World (Week 1)

With the booming industrialization in the City of Manila is the existince of a saddening situation of some oppressed parts of the metro. Despite the modernization and scientific breakthrough, the downfall of some aspects in the community is still evident. Furthermore, a saddening health situation is also one of the major concerns that must be addressed by the city government.

My first week in Tondo, Manila was an eye opener despite of my knowledge of the real situation of the people living in the said area. Seeing it personally is heartbreaking. If I would gather all the pieces of the puzzle (Tondo situation), it would reveal a bigger and remarkable percentage of the unfortunate situation of the place.

While approaching Canossa, what struck me the most was the “island of  houses”  occupying the national road. “Paraiso”, a popular song by the Smoky Mountain popped up immediately into my mind. Yes, it’s poverty and it only depicts that there is lacking political will in the city.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed by twins who were for sale because of financial difficulties of their family. Fortunately, they were rescued from the mother and was freed from the outcome it may cause the little beings.

The number of patients diagnosed to have Pulmonary Tuberculosis in the community is alarming. The very young and the very old are at risk however they were managed accordingly and enrolled to DOTS  program of the center. The perseverance of the Canossian sisters, the hardworking staff and the compliance of the patients are symbols of thecontinued success of the program.

The people became aware of the significance of seeing a doctor. Health education plays an important role in the community since they have understood the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment. They were given the opportunity to see medical personnels who could let them understand more of their diseases, be aware of the disease process and value the importance of prevention rather than cure.

The welcoming staff of the center invites a positive vibes to the community and creates a better atmosphere in the promotion of health programs in the community. I am looking forward for more significant experiences in the coming days.

Manila Stories 3: Street Foods in Manila

I was once fond of buying streetfoods. Turning back time, it was also one of the enjoyed past times I had with my friends. Street foods are ready to eat goodies sold in public places. Often, from a portable food booth, a cart or some in food trucks. According to a study from Food and Agriculture Organization, 2.5 billion people eat street food everyday. Today, people try and purchase street food for some reasons: It is sold for a reasonable price, it is flavorful, to experience an ethnic and authentic cuisines and some for a nostalgic experience. In the Philippines, street foods are very common too. Here are some of Pinoy favorite street foods to choose from: Calamares: deeply fried squid cut as rings covered dipped in egg and flour.
