Flower Garlands

Flower garland sellers are common in the Philippines.

Quezon City, Philippines is one of the largest cities in the country. With the vast and rapid changes, the undeniable fact of poverty still exists.

I stayed for about a year in Quezon City for my medical licensure examination review classes. I was in Fairview and my stay was indeed memorable.

I met people and made friends with them. Somehow, they touched my life and they will always be cherished.

These are my classmates! The background is Pearl Drive and it's where the little girls stay and sell garlands. :)

Everytime I pass by Pearl Drive in Fairview, two little street girls ran after me to sell flower garlands. They have been doing that for a long time already and they have no choice because the little amount they gain from it will be spent for their classes the next day.

The little girls never knew my name that time so, they do call me "sir bente-bente" (sir 20-20). That was cute! Hehe. Twenty, for the reason that I give them 20 pesos in exchange for the garlands.

These little girls made a special mark in my life. Their present situation and their determination to realize their dreams is heart warming. Looking myself at the mirror, thinking of what I had accomplished and the support that I got from the people around me is very far better than them. How lucky are we to have this kind of life. :)

I hope someday, they'll have a brighter future and will not just sell garlands but to finish their schooling and put up their own business.

May God bless them both. :)

Meet Ella and Yen - the garland sellers. Just kidding! They are my classmates. Hahah...
They too have their own special encounter with the kids. Hehe. :)

Manila Stories 3: Street Foods in Manila

I was once fond of buying streetfoods. Turning back time, it was also one of the enjoyed past times I had with my friends. Street foods are ready to eat goodies sold in public places. Often, from a portable food booth, a cart or some in food trucks. According to a study from Food and Agriculture Organization, 2.5 billion people eat street food everyday. Today, people try and purchase street food for some reasons: It is sold for a reasonable price, it is flavorful, to experience an ethnic and authentic cuisines and some for a nostalgic experience. In the Philippines, street foods are very common too. Here are some of Pinoy favorite street foods to choose from: Calamares: deeply fried squid cut as rings covered dipped in egg and flour.
